Startup apps are programs that open automatically after you sign in. Some are useful—such as security software or a password manager—while others can wait until you open them yourself.
Use Settings
Open Start → Settings → Apps → Startup. You will see apps allowed to start automatically and, often, their estimated startup impact. Switch off apps you do not need immediately after sign-in.
Or use Task Manager
Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager. Select Startup apps, choose an app and select Disable. This does not delete the app; you can still open it normally and re-enable it later.
What is usually safe to disable?
- Music, game launchers and chat apps you do not use all day.
- Creative tools, printer helpers or update checkers you prefer to open manually.
- Apps you recognise and can identify in the list.
What should you leave alone?
- Security software and anything clearly labelled Windows or Microsoft that you are unsure about.
- Hardware drivers, touchpad tools and accessibility tools you rely on.
- Any item you do not recognise—search the exact name first.
Tip: disable only two or three apps at a time, then restart and see whether the PC feels better. That makes it easy to undo a change if you miss a feature.
